Giuseppe Garibaldi

Painting by Giuseppe Taddei, XIX century

The Tricolore flags used during Garibaldi’s military expedition were usually improvised and had different characteristics lacking an official flag. Some of them had the cross of the Savoy Family on a white background and have been found after the downfall of the fortress of Gaeta in Borboni soldiers’ hands. Garibaldi himself had assured the king of Piedmont to assume the motto: “Italy under King Vittorio Emanuele”. The Corps of volunteers coming from Sicily fighting with Garibaldi had the emblem of Trinacria (Sicily was so called in ancient times…) in the middle of the Tricolour flag.
