On January 26, 1802 the Consulta di Lione institutes the Italian Republic with Milan as its capital and Napoleon as President. In the some year on proposal of Trivulzi, war Minister, the Italian Republic redefines the shape of its flag over sea and land: the first has a square shape “a red background containing a white rhombus, containing another green background square”; the second has the same colours but rectangular shape. In May 1805 Napoleon becomes King of Italy in Milan, after his proclamation as French Emperor.
