«I had purchased the fifteenth-century hamlet with its own water mill 24 years ago. It was plainly going to ruin, I had spent so much time there with my friends and I couldn’t bear to think of it being lost. Then, together with two partners, in 2000 I decided to set up a farm, offering tourist accommodation in the farmhouse. We set up our vegetable plot, pig farm and a small orchard. We renovated the rooms to their original state, trying to leave them as intact as possible: words written by the millers are still visible on the walls and there is an ancient, fifteenth century kitchen, still intact, which I leave open to visitors. For the last three years I’ve continued with the business single-handed. I was born in the mountains myself: only someone from the mountains could resist there for more than a year. You have to deal with solitude, silence and nothing. That’s because the mountains, especially these days, have been totally abandoned, with just a handful of families living there. Don’t forget we’re talking about places just half an hour away from Reggio Emilia.Personally, I’m not at all afraid, even if just above me there is a castle which is said to be haunted. In actual fact, it’s a very safe place because thieves don’t come up that far. They’re afraid! I still see my future there; I may need to look for some innovation. I would like to create an eco-village, for example, a sort of hamlet for testing alternative social life and sustainable activities. That was my pipe-dream when I was young, although I’m getting a bit past it now. However, as I also became a father when I was a bit older, I can also create this village when I’m older!».
